Disney Hall Inaugural Ceremony
In the year 2003 Luis Perez was commissioned to compose music for the
inagurational ceremonies of the Disney Concert Hall in L.os Angeles California.
Inspired by the Mayan book "Popol Vuh" he created a piece of contemporary
music for four percussionists, wind instruments from preColumbian Mexico
and modern dance. Under the title "The Dawn of Mankind" this piece was
performed twice in the main hall during the inaugural day. The choreography
was based on a process of meticulous research by adding movement to
pictographic representations of dance as depicted in screen folds, [codices]
sculpture and paintings, Luis also designed and created the costumes out of
organic materials and animal remains such as pelts, feathers, bones etc....
all by hand.
